Vicente Rubio-Pueyo
Vicente Rubio-Pueyo obtuvo su doctorado en Estudios Españoles Culturales en Stony Brook University y enseña en Fordham University. Actualmente está trabajando en un proyecto de libro en torno a la relación del Estado y los movimientos sociales en la España contemporánea.
Ha escrito extensamente en contextos académicos y en prensa sobre la sociedad actual , el comienzo de la crisis y la emergencia del movimiento Indignados y de fuerzas políticas como Podemos y las “confluencias municipales.” Es el autor de “Municipalismo en España” un estudio que le encargó Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung de Nueva York. Entre otras iniciativas, ha colaborado con el Left Forum y actualmente es parte del comité directivo del Fearless Cities-North American Municipalist Summit (New York, July 27-29).
Vicente Rubio-Pueyo has a PhD in Spanish Cultural Studies by Stony Brook University and teaches at Fordham University. He is currently working on a book on political cultures, State and Movements in Contemporary Spain, from the 70’s Transition to the present.
He has written extensively, both in academic contexts and in the press, on the current social and political conjuncture opened in Spain since the beginning of the crisis and the emergence of the Indignados movement, and on political forces like Podemos and the “municipal confluences.” He is author of “Municipalism in Spain” a study commissioned by Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung-NYC Office. Among other initiatives, he has collaborated with the Left Forum, and currently is part of the steering committee of Fearless Cities-North American Municipalist Summit (New York, July 27-29).

PILOT PROGRAM DESIGNED FOR COMMUNITIES INTERESTED IN EXPLORING THE ECOLOGICAL AND CIVILIZATORY CRISIS FROM AN INTERDISCIPLINARY PERSPECTIVE LINKED TO COMMUNITY ACTIVISM.
PROGRAM TITLE: «Ecological and civilizatory crisis: Visioning a sustainable future and an equitable and just world.»
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Can we imagine a sustainable future? Can we imagine a fair and just world? Do we live in these conditions in the present? Ecological and civilizatory crisis: Visioning a sustainable future and an equitable and fair world is an interdisciplinary program around the concept of ecological crisis and civilization. This pilot project has been developed by Professor Palmar Álvarez-Blanco in Carleton College, Minnesota. It is an exploration through 10 projections (one per week) accompanied by round tables with experts, activists and community leaders. This pilot program is open to anyone in the community of Northfield and Carleton and is accompanied by a course parallel to the projections/sessions that make up the program. With this initiative it is expected to inform, provoke public debates and inspire collaboration and action in the community. This pilot program can be downloaded, copied, transformed without problem. It is available to anyone who has an interest in carrying it out in their own community.
THE PROGRAM:
This program consists of three main components that, in collaboration, cultivate a holistic perspective on the ecological and civilizatory crisis: a pre-viewing presentation, the screening of a film or documentary and a post-viewing activity. The pre and post viewing activities are designed to provoke thinking about the topics that will be addressed in the projections. These consist of questions and group dynamics for the before and after each session. The program is composed of a total of 10 projections. Each screening will be presented by a person linked to the field or theme of the screening. In summary, this cycle aims to create a community around the central theme, promoting thought, imagination and links as tools to face global challenges and opening the possibility of getting involved in real solutions for a sustainable future. The program, including pre- and post-viewing activities as well as additional resources, will be published on this website (in English and Spanish). It is freely accessible for any interested person to participate.
OPERATION: How has this program worked in Northfield, Minnesota?
As not all people have the same availability, we invite people to participate in this program in several ways:
- Attend all movie screenings and round tables at the Carleton College cinema on Mondays at 7:00 p.m.
- Select those sessions of interest without having to attend the round tables.
- The people in the educational field are invited to link the program to their courses and could take their students to the sessions or give them extra credit for attending.
- Any Northfield citizen could attend the sessions, create their own discussion group following the program, or link to the discussion group at the Public Library in Northfield.
- The people of the Carleton community (faculty, administrative staff, campus workers and students) had the option of joining a working group organized in the Learning Teaching Center.
- The people who lead a group or community group could organize their own discussion group following the program or modifying it according to what the group thought interesting.

TÍTULO DEL PROGRAMA: “Crisis ecológica y civilizatoria: Visionando un futuro sostenible y un mundo equitativo y justo.”
DESCRIPCIÓN GENERAL:
¿Podemos imaginar un futuro sostenible? ¿Podemos imaginar un mundo equitativo y justo? ¿Vivimos en estas condiciones en el presente? Crisis ecológica y civilizatoria: Visionando un futuro sostenible y un mundo equitativo y justo es un programa interdisciplinar en torno al concepto de la crisis ecológica y de civilización. Este proyecto piloto ha sido desarrollado por la profesora Palmar Álvarez-Blanco en Carleton College, Minnesota. Se trata de una exploración a través de 10 proyecciones (una por semana) acompañadas de mesas redondas con expertos, activistas y líderes comunitarios. Este programa piloto está abierto a cualquier persona de la comunidad de Northfield y de Carleton y se acompaña de un curso paralelo a las proyecciones/sesiones que componen el programa. Con esta iniciativa se espera informar, provocar debates públicos e inspirar a la colaboración y a la acción en la comunidad. EL PROGRAMA:

Las actividades de pre y post visionado están diseñadas para provocar el pensamiento sobre los temas que se abordarán en las proyecciones. Estas constan de preguntas y dinámicas grupales para el antes y el después de cada sesión. El programa está compuesto por un total de 10 proyecciones. Cada proyección será presentada por una persona vinculada con el campo o tema de la proyección. En resumen, este ciclo pretende crear una comunidad en torno al tema central, fomentando el pensamiento, la imaginación y los vínculos como herramientas para encarar los desafíos globales y abriendo la posibilidad de involucrarnos en soluciones reales para un futuro sostenible. El programa, incluidas las actividades de pre y post-visionado así como los recursos adicionales, se publicará en este sitio web (en inglés y español). FUNCIONAMIENTO: ¿Cómo ha funcionado este programa en Northfield, Minnesota?
Como no todas las personas disponemos de los mismo tiempos, invitamos a las personas a que participaran en este programa de varias maneras:
- Asistiendo a todas las proyecciones de películas y mesas redondas en el cine de Carleton College los lunes a las 7:00pm.
- Seleccionando aquellas sesiones de interés sin necesidad de asistir a las mesas redondas

Sobre la Exhibición
La intencion de esta pequeña muestra es hacer un recorrido por el arte gráfico que, mediante el uso de Ia sátira y Ia potencia visual, ha perseguido la toma de conciencia por parte de la sociedad moderna de las contradicciones y sinsentidos que proliferan desde su constitucion misma. No obstante, siendo tantos y tan destacados los cultivadores de esta disciplina, se hacia francamente dificil abarcarlos a todos, por lo que en la presente exposición se ha priorizado el elegir a algunos de los más relevantes de ellos y que con su trabajo consiguen representar todos los estilos y las épocas de la gráfica politica.
De esta manera, es posible seguir la evolución de este género visual desde sus inicios aliá por el siglo XVIII, primeramente ligada al campo del arte pictorico y al surgimiento de la prensa escrita, para más tarde llegar al prolifico y terrible siglo XX, y asi hasta nuestros días, en donde su práctica está ampliamente extendida en tanto que más que nunca se bace necesario, si aspiramos verdaderamente a sobrevivir como especie, el ejercicio de la reilexión y la lucidez.
About the Exhibition
The intention of this small exhibit is to provide a brief overview of graphic art throughout history that, with the use of satire and visual power, has exposed the fundamental contradictions and nonsense that define modern society. Nevertheless, the cultivators of this disciple are so numerous and renowned that it is frankly difficult to include them all, and for this exhibit a select number of prominent artists were chosen whose work best represent the diverse styles of graphic art across the different political and historical eras.
In this manner, it is possible to follow the evolution of this visual genre from its beginnings in the eighteenth century, first linked to the field of pictorial art and the rise of written press, and later in the prolific and terrible twentieth century and continuing into the twenty-first century, in which its practice has widely extended such that now, more than ever, lucidity and reflection is necessary if we truly wish to survive as a species.

Theme: Signs of a Civilizatory Crisis
Film: A Delicate Balance (2016), Guillermo García López
In «A Delicate Balance» three stories are intertwined in three different continents: two Japanese executives in Tokyo whose lives are locked in a vicious circle of consumerism and work in corporations, a sub-Saharan community in Monte Gurugú, near the fence of Melilla, the border between Africa and Europe, which affects individuals every day trying to cross into the First World, and several families in Spain destroyed by the crisis, real estate speculation, political corruption, and the loss of their homes. These stories are articulated through the words of José Mujica, former President of Uruguay, who in the film addresses universal issues that threaten humanity, challenging important pillars of the world in which we live.

En «Frágil Equilibrio» se entrelazan tres historias en tres continentes distintos: dos ejecutivos japoneses en Tokyo cuyas vidas se encuentran encerradas en un círculo vicioso de consumismo y trabajo en corporaciones, una comunidad subsahariana en el Monte Gurugú, cerca de la valla de Melilla, la frontera entre África y Europa, que se juega la vida todos los días intentando cruzar al Primer Mundo y varias familias en España destrozadas por la crisis, la especulación inmobiliaria, la corrupción política y la pérdida de sus viviendas. Estas historias se articulan a través de las palabras de José Mujica, ex-Presidente de Uruguay, quien en la película aborda cuestiones universales que amenazan a la humanidad, poniendo en entredicho importantes pilares del mundo en que vivimos.

Now, developing nations are starting their own love affair with an electric utopia exponentially increasing the demands on an already threatened environment. From the laundry-less gardens of sunny California to India’s communal open air Laundromats, Drying for Freedom by Steven Lake is a voyage into the new environmental battlefield where money, status and class come first and our planet is a poor second.

Sobre Ruedas: el sueño del automóvil by Oscar Clemente narrates the history of the car through a documentary collage. Energy used to originate from plants and animals but today it is machine produced. While the car was once glamorous and coveted, its harmful effects are now known. Cars infringe on physical spaces, emit harmful gases, and discourage socialization. This film encourages thought about this culturally central vehicle and how it interacts with our environment.
