el arte de volar – Artivismo en el siglo XXI

Antonio Altarriba escribe, «Nací en Zaragoza en 1952 y siempre he vivido entre absorto y abducido por la ficción. De niño leía con pasión todo tipo de narraciones pero, más que leerlas, me gustaba inventarlas. Pasaba horas dibujando batallas o urdiendo intrigas para la docena de indios que componían mi arsenal de juguetes. Me bastaba abrir el Atlas (Salinas, edición de 1958) para imaginar los más extraordinarios viajes o las más rocambolescas aventuras.

También disfrutaba contando historias a mi amigo Antonio Sarrablo. Íbamos y volvíamos juntos de clase y yo me las arreglaba para que la acción alcanzara su punto culminante al llegar al portal de casa. Así me aseguraba de que, al día siguiente, Sarrablo, aunque sólo fuera para conocer la continuación, vendría a buscarme. Aún recuerdo algunos de los episodios de aquel relato interminable (probablemente de 1963 a 1966) y la atención extasiada de mi amigo. Eran historias inspiradas en tebeos, películas, seriales radiofónicos, novelas de aventuras y contadas desde la erupción hormonal. Esa manera de iniciarme en el arte de narrar me dejó claro desde un principio que, al igual que tantos otros, escribo para que me quieran o, al menos, para que me acompañen al colegio.

Lo de menos para mí ha sido la forma de contar. Y no es que no me importe el medio, pero me gusta cambiar. Encauzo la imaginación por canales distintos y la vierto en viñetas, fotos o palabras. Así varío y me hago la ilusión de que no escribo siempre la misma historia. Creo que diversidad y diversión van de la mano y no sólo en la etimología. He hecho una clasificación de los distintos géneros y medios que he utilizado. Se trata de una clasificación aleatoria pero que agrupa casi todo lo que he escrito».

As a child I read all sorts of stories with passion, but even more than reading them, I liked to invent them. I spent hours drawing battles or plotting intrigues for the dozen Indians that comprised my arsenal of toys. I only needed to open the Atlas (Salinas, 1958 edition) to imagine the most extraordinary trips or the most elaborate adventures.

I also enjoyed telling stories to my friend Antonio Sarrablo. We would walk to and from school together, and I would arrange it so that the story’s action would reach its culminating point just as I arrived at the doorstep of my house. This way, I could be sure that the next day, Sarrablo, if only to hear the continuation of the story, would come find me. I still remember some of the episodes of that interminable tale (probably from 1963 to 1966) and the rapt attention of my friend. They were stories inspired by comics, movies, radio series, adventure novels, all told from the eruption of hormones. This manner of introduction to the art of storytelling made it clear from the outset that, like so many others, I write so that people will love me or, at least, so that they will walk with me to school.

What has been least important to me has been the way of telling them. And it’s not that the medium doesn’t matter to me, but I like to change. I direct my imagination through different channels, and I pour it into cartoons, pictures or words. This way I vary the pattern and delude myself into believing that I’m not always writing the same story. I think that diversity and diversion go hand in hand, and not just etymologically. I’ve made a classification of the different genres and media that I have used. It’s a random classification, but it groups and contains almost everything I’ve written.»
