The workshop with Toni Serra began with a question and answer session with Serra, where he explained his artmaking process and worldview to the students participating in the workshop. This was followed by Entremundos, a screening of several of Serra’s short films. The screening was open to the entire campus as part of Carleton\u2019s International Film Forum, and was followed by a Q&A session with Serra. Serra’s workshop concluded with a presentation, Hacking the Veil. Central to the work Serra presented is a discussion of the limitations of representation in capturing reality. Serra’s work problematizes the images that come readily packaged for spectators in our society, seeking to expose their capacity for the perpetuation of harmful stereotypes and other limitations to understanding our social and greater reality. This component of Serra’s work was put in explicitly political terms in his talk Hacking The Veil, which students attended as the final stage of the workshop, where Serra made a connection between the \u2018borders\u2019 created by stereotypical representations of migrants and the physical policing of borders in Europe.<\/p>\n
