Film Introduction, Film Summary, Round Table Discussion<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

The International Film Forum Winter 2018 commenced this week with the screening of <\/span>A Delicate Balance<\/span><\/i> (2016) by <\/span>Guillermo Garcia L\u00f3pez. The film was introduced by<\/span> Christopher Chiappari,<\/span> Professor of Anthropology at St. Olaf College. He discussed society\u2019s transition to neo-liberal capitalism and the consequential deprivation of rights. An emphasis on community has been replaced with individual responsibility. Chiappari reminded the audience that while discourse can be a way of talking about things, it can also be a means for avoiding dialogue.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The movie was played following this thought provoking introduction. The film followed the stories of migrants in West Africa, the housing crisis in Spain, and the life of a salaryman in Japan. These stories highlighted the loss of personal liberty, time, and human decency but despite the upsetting tales, Pepe M\u00fajica, who was president in Uruguay from 2010-2015, offered an optimistic outlook. He said \u201clove is the biggest attribute of living things,\u201d hopefully inspiring action amongst the IFF attendees. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Feeling motivated to cultivate change, audience members had to the opportunity to engage in a dialogue with panel members Noboru Tomonari, Associate Professor of Asian Languages and Literature; Cherif Keita, Professor of French and Francophone Studies, \u00a0and Claudia Lange, Visiting Instructor \u00a0of Spanish; Mar Valdecantos, Writer, artist, translator, community organizer and member of the Human Rights Commission. <\/span><\/p>\n

Claudia:<\/span><\/i> M\u00fajica invokes individuals to take action, we can not be indifferent. There is much that can be done within this small community and we, as Mujica suggests, have an ethical call to do something. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Mar: <\/span><\/i>Given her expertise with human rights, Mar commented on the United Declaration of Human Rights. Mar emphasized the need for action across all levels and discussed healthcare initiatives that are entitling all people to free healthcare. Furthermore, Mar directed the audience\u2019s attention to \u201capooraphobia\u201d (a fear of the poor) that plagues many communities. As a result, impoverished individuals are assumed to be uneducated, unskilled, and are diminished to less than human. Mar believes that at there must be action at the local level. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Noboru:<\/span><\/i> Noboru commented on the divide between the city (specifically, Tokyo) and the rural parts of Japan. He noted the additional \u201cwall\u201d between genders that existed in the images in the film. He critiqued Japan\u2019s failure to counter the establishment. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The audience members exchanged thoughts of despair and hope regarding the current human and ecological condition. One audience member praised grassroots movements in Spain that are responding to the housing crisis. Above all, audience members left with the poignant message, \u201cdo not feel disempowered.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span> El Foro de Film Internacional del Invierno 2018 comenz\u00f3 esta semana con la proyecci\u00f3n de Fragil Equilibrio (2016) de Guillermo Garc\u00eda L\u00f3pez. La pel\u00edcula fue presentada por Christopher Chiappari, profesor de antropolog\u00eda de St. Olaf College. \u00c9l discuti\u00f3 la transici\u00f3n de la sociedad al capitalismo neoliberal y la consecuente privaci\u00f3n de derechos. El \u00e9nfasis en la comunidad ha sido reemplazado por la responsabilidad individual. Chiappari le record\u00f3 a la audiencia que el discurso puede ser una forma de hablar pero tambi\u00e9n puede ser un medio para evitar el di\u00e1logo.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

La pel\u00edcula segu\u00eda las historias de los inmigrantes en el oeste de \u00c1frica, la crisis de la vivienda en Espa\u00f1a y la vida de un asalariado en Jap\u00f3n. Estas historias mostraban la p\u00e9rdida de la libertad personal, el tiempo y la decencia humana, pero a pesar de las historias perturbadoras, Pepe M\u00fajica, que fue presidente en Uruguay de 2010 a 2015, ofreci\u00f3 una perspectiva optimista. Dijo que \u00abel amor es el atributo m\u00e1s grande de los seres vivos\u00bb, con suerte inspirando acci\u00f3n entre los asistentes al IFF.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sinti\u00e9ndose motivados para cultivar el cambio, los miembros del p\u00fablico tuvieron la oportunidad de entablar un di\u00e1logo con los miembros del panel Noboru Tomonari, Profesor Asociado de Lenguajes y Literatura Asi\u00e1ticos; Cherif Keita, profesor de franc\u00e9s y estudios franc\u00f3fonos, y Claudia Lange, instructora visitante de espa\u00f1ol; Mar Valdecantos, escritor, artista, traductor, organizador comunitario y miembro de la Comisi\u00f3n de Derechos Humanos.<\/span><\/p>\n

Claudia:<\/em> M\u00fajica invoca a las personas a actuar, no podemos ser indiferentes. Hay mucho que se puede hacer dentro de esta peque\u00f1a comunidad y nosotros, como sugiere Mujica, tenemos un llamado \u00e9tico para hacer algo.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mar:<\/em> Dado su experiencia con los derechos humanos, Mar coment\u00f3 sobre la Declaraci\u00f3n de los Derechos Humanos. Mar hizo hincapi\u00e9 en la necesidad de actuar en todos los niveles y discuti\u00f3 las iniciativas de atenci\u00f3n de la salud que dan derecho a todas las personas a la atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica gratuita. Adem\u00e1s, Mar dirigi\u00f3 la atenci\u00f3n del p\u00fablico a la \u00abapoorafobia\u00bb (un miedo a los pobres) que afecta a muchas comunidades. Como resultado, se supone que las personas empobrecidas no tienen educaci\u00f3n, no tienen habilidades y est\u00e1n disminuidas a menos de lo humano. Mar cree que debe haber acci\u00f3n a nivel local.

Un miembro de la audiencia elogi\u00f3 los movimientos de Espa\u00f1a que est\u00e1n respondiendo a la crisis de la vivienda.
