Film Introduction, Film Summary, Q&A
Joel Weisberg, Carleton Professor of Physics and Astronomy and the Natural Sciences, introduced the third session of the International Film Forum. He noted the two women who were prominent in The Last Call as a way of prefacing the tremendous works of Donella Meadows and her mentee, Elizabeth Sawin. Elizabeth Sawin, a biologist and Co-Director of Climate Interactive then gave a skype introduction Meadows’ speech Down to Earth.
Donella Meadows presented Down to Earth in 1993 at a sustainability conference in Costa Rica. Meadows addressed how most environmental issues are tackled according to models, info, and theory but instead of fixating on these factors, Meadows emphasized that in order to find clarity in goals, one must articulate a vision. She states that leaders have “fallen into the trap of implementation.” Another piece of advice the Meadows offers is to “state what you really want, not what you think you can get.” A vision then comes responsible and ethical when it is shared with others.
Sawin spoke with the audience following a visualization exercise. Audience members shared their visions, stating that they imagined:
- People will listen to each other with respect and compassion
- Tesla batteries, solar connection, an analog of the internet
- Attentive neighbors
Sawin encouraged audience members to continue to exercise this visioning muscle. She then exposed the audience to several organizations that grew out of Meadows’ efforts: Cob Hill, Balaton Group, Upper Valley Land Trust, Sustainability Institute, Academy for Systems Change, Climate Interactive, Sustainable Food Lab, and Sustainability Leaders Network. Sawin highlighted that oftentimes, environmental efforts coexist with health objectives so by focusing on changing an environmental flaw, multi-solving can occur.
